About China’s Rattan Weaving Culture

Seventy percent of the world’s rattan products are produced in Guangxi Province, China. As early as 2,000 years ago, locals learned to weave various wild rattan vines into exquisite, practical items. This ancient culture spread to other Asian countries—such as Vietnam and Thailand—through trade and population migration; however, to this day, China remains the country with the most intact preservation of rattan weaving culture worldwide.

Walking through local villages, you’ll find that everyone—from 8-year-old children to 80-year-old elders—is skilled at weaving a variety of products. It’s as if the skill is in their genes. Therefore, the high-end, exquisite rattan products you commonly see in major supermarkets and luxury stores across Europe and the Americas are almost exclusively crafted by artisans in the rural areas of Guangxi, China. These purely handcrafted items not only give the products a personal touch but also imbue them with cultural significance.
